Success Tips
- SAKAI is our online class platform. Access is available through myNSCC. Learn more about using the platform in this handy study tool.
- For every three credit hours (typically one course), plan on three hours of class time, along with 6-9 hours (estimated) of study time per week
- For students taking 12 credit hours (full-time schedule, typically four classes), plan on 12 hours of class time and 24-36 hours (estimated) study time per week
- Manage your time by writing out your weekly schedule and mapping out your assignments using your student planner. Be aware of how many hours each day you are devoting to each task (class time, homework, travel time, caring for family, exercising, etc.)
- Set a study schedule. Find a spot on campus that is comfortable and quiet. Remember to take regular breaks.
- There is power in numbers! Join or create your own study group
- Create a folder on your desktop for each course, label it with the name of your course. Save your course syllabus, assignments, and any other documents needed for the course here.
- gcfglobal.org offers information and free lessons on more than 200 topics from Microsoft Office and email, reading, math and more
Early Warning Alerts
If you are not attending class or have missed many assignments without communication with your instructor, you will be reported to the success center coordinator as an “early alert.” You may also be reported if you are not making progress in a class. If this happens:
- We will try to reach out to you, so please be responsive, as our goal is to help you get back on track. You may have different options available, and you will receive an outline of each from either your advisor, TRIO coach, instructor or the success center coordinator.
- Avoid being reported as an “early alert” by communicating with your instructor and discussing any issues with your instructor, advisor, coach, etc. Attend your classes, be prepared, and complete your assignments.
Academic Standing
Academic Standing is verified at the end of each semester. Learners with a 2.0 GPA or higher remain in good academic standing. Learners are placed on academic probation or suspension when the GPA falls below the applicable minimum level. These learners will work with the success center coordinator to develop an academic success plan, and they will take the GSD100 Success Seminar course.
Academic Probation
Learners are placed on academic probation at the end of any semester, including summer, in which their cumulative grade point average falls below the following minimum levels:
Credit Hours Attempted | Cumulative GPA Below |
---|---|
1-15 | 1.40 |
16-30 | 1.60 |
31-45 | 1.80 |
46+ | 2.00 |
Learners will remain on academic probation until their cumulative GPA meets or exceeds the minimum levels referenced above. While on probation, learners may register for a maximum of 12 credit hours.
Academic Suspension
A learner on probation will be suspended at the end of any semester, including summer, if the minimum GPA is not reached while on probation. There will be no suspension if the semester GPA is at least 2.0 or the learner shows significant progress as determined by the vice president for academics.
The period of suspension will be for one academic semester, excluding summer. Learners will be required to develop an academic success plan with the success center coordinator and have it approved by the division dean prior to being released from academic suspension by the vice president for academics. A student may register for six credit hours the first semester returning from suspension.
