NSCC Proud: Jesse & Abigail Perez

Jesse Perez and his daughter, Abigail, are both dedicated engineering students at Northwest State. Jesse’s sister and wife attended NSCC, so the family was already familiar with the College. With a strong curiosity for how things work, Jesse found the mechanical engineering program a natural fit as his major.

Abigail got her start at NSCC as a College Credit Plus student in high school and thoroughly enjoys the hands-on nature of learning in a manufacturing environment. Not only does this father-daughter duo study at NSCC, they also both work at Sauder Woodworking.

evMotorsports Club Competes at EV Grand Prix

After an outstanding performance in time trials, the NSCC team earned the number two spot on the pole for the 2017 EV Grand Prix. Unfortunately, another car smashed into our bumper, causing a battery issue that forced our team out of the race after a few laps.

Thanks to the group’s excellent efforts off the track, the NSCC team earned first place in the community outreach portion of the race. Way to represent!

Student Spotlight: Alyson Starr

Alyson Starr is like many students at Northwest State—hard-working, focused and goal-oriented. Her time at NSCC is split between taking classes and providing valuable assistance to students in the NSCC Success Center. Alyson sat down with us to share some valuable lessons, including why she chose NSCC, helpful advice for high school students and how her college experience has provided her with some great social opportunities.

Scholarship Reception Speaker: Teena Pinckney

Like many NSCC students, Teena Pinckney has experienced her share of setbacks and challenges. Despite the uncertainty of what her future holds, Teena is certain that the education she is receiving at Northwest State will change her life. Teena was the student speaker at this year’s scholarship reception, sharing the emotional story of her educational journey. Both she and her husband, Donald, received scholarships this year thanks to generous donors and the NSCC Foundation.

NSCC Proud: David Miller

David Miller, an NSCC student in the Arts & Sciences Division, is more than an American history buff—he’s also a first-time author on the subject. David’s interest in the Lewis & Clark expedition inspired him to tackle the topic for a class project, which in turn became “A Travelerz Trew Tale.” The historical fiction book provides an account of the expedition as told through the character Daniel Mueller. David was kind enough to sit down with us and not only share information about his educational experience at NSCC, but also provide an “in-character” reading of an excerpt from his book. Check it out!

Fall 2016 Commencement Student Speaker

Katherine Wolfe of Defiance was the student speaker at Northwest State’s fall commencement ceremony. Katherine graduated Summa Cum Laude with an associate degree in nursing. She is also a member of Phi Theta Kappa and Alpha Delta Nu honor societies.

During her speech, Wolfe mentioned that her nursing degree “represents a mid-life career change…one that (she) never expected,” a truth shared by other fall graduates as well. Wolfe continued, “You are only as happy as you make up your mind you’re going to be. It’s less about possessions, and fully about attitude. Count your blessings and be happy.”
